Alcoholism feels like rain. I tell people that and they look at me like I’m crazy. But it’s true: Alcoholism feels like rain. Or, like being caught out in the rain, on a cold day, with no umbrella and no jacket and worst of all nowhere to run to, to stay dry, except the inside of a bottle.

With alcohol addiction, it’s like every minute you’re not drinking is a minute you’re caught outside in a nasty storm. You hate it, can’t stand it, will do whatever it stakes to get somewhere warm. You don’t drink because you want to; you drink because you have to, because that’s the only way you’re going to keep from getting drenched.

So yes, alcoholism really does feel like rain. And anyone who says otherwise obviously doesn’t know what it means to live life under gray skies.

stop the pursuit

Drug addiction stays with you. That’s why drug rehab is so vital to drug recovery, when you really get down to it: Drug addiction stays with you. Haunts you, even, chases you in a way that no monster or boogie man ever could. Addiction is so hard to beat precisely because it never leaves you alone…and drug rehab is so important precisely because it finally gets the damn thing to stop its pursuit.

No one gets sober outside of a drug rehab center. That should be obvious, really; this country is full of fallen heroes and relapsed success stories. Without a rehab program, you don’t stand one chance in a million of ever getting better for good. That’s not the way addiction works, and that’s not the way recovery happens.

If you’ve made it this far, you already know the truth: Drug addiction is a brutal disease. Now, it’s incumbent upon you to do something about it, to get engaged with your own healing and to start making tomorrow a thing worth looking forward to. The bottom line: You’ve got too much to lose not to make drug rehab work for you.
